Founded in 1899 as Broomhill UF Church, the congregation numbers around 600. Our minister is the Rev. Bill Ferguson. Bill is the sixth minister in the history of Broomhill Church. With two Sunday services and a full programme of weekly activities Broomhill has a lot to offer the local community. Officebearers and organisation leaders are always willing to provide more information about the Church. Having inducted my successor, I returned to the vestry and handed over my badges of office – the Moderatorial ring, cross and preaching scarf. Proud and grateful that I’d been allowed to hold that high office, I left the building a happy man and knowing that after a two week break in Spain I’d be returning to full-time parish ministry. Though I was Moderator for twelve months, I had ‘shadowed’ my predecessor for five months up until my own installation. I can’t get over the sense of freedom I now enjoy but I wouldn’t have missed the previous twelve months for anything. Without being pompous, I knew before my year of office began that there would be many Moderatorial duties I would undertake happily and enthusiastically. I’ve always enjoyed socialising and knew that as Moderator I could take these engagements in my stride. In all I undertook over 150 engagements and revelled in those occasions when I was encountering and engaging with friends and strangers all over the city. I didn’t realise just how often I’d be wining and dining and – usually – in some considerable style. On numerous occasions I visited the City Chambers where many functions were hosted by the Lord Provost and his team of Baillies. They were always generous hosts and their magnaminity embraced all backgrounds and races and creeds. Glasgow Cathedral was another venue where the Moderator was always made welcome when the city was commemorating some significant event or anniversary. I will long remember the Remembrance Day service in George Square and the 50th anniversary of the Cheapside Fire Disaster. At these events I was often in the company of other Church leaders from throughout the city and it was good when we as Christians from different denominations could happily demonstrate our ‘oneness in Christ’. In all my sixty-three years I’d never been in so many churches in such a short space of time and I must say in many of these buildings the architecture was stunning and the worship offered there was of the highest merit. I”ll long remember the friendship and many kindnesses shown to me by Archbishop Mario Conti and to be present in St. Mary’s Cathedral for the consecration of Bishop Gregor Duncan was a truly unforgettable experience. When I’d accepted the invitation to be Moderator Elect of the Presbytery, the one thing which did daunt me was the moderating of monthly Presbytery meetings. I’ve never been a ‘procedural wizard’ but here, too, my brothers and sisters in the Presbytery Office and Council frequently smoothed my passage. When I look back on these meetings I can’t think of any meeting which overwhelmed me and I considered it an enormous privilege to be welcoming and thanking different people for all that they had contributed to ministry in various spheres of service. I especially looked forward to Presbytery services when Ministers and Readers and other Church workers were being inducted, ordained, introduced, or set apart for particular tasks. I visited many churches where I’d never been before and I can’t think of any place where I wasn’t warmly welcomed. I wouldn’t have missed these experiences for anything even though much midnight oil had to be burned as I prepared for them. I’ve always tried to be disciplined in my preparations for worship and will treasure most the messages which regularly came to me from brothers and sisters in the faith all expressing appreciation of the worship I’d offered in their company. Though being Moderator was a personal honour for me I hope, too, that I gave credit to the wonderful people of Broomhill Church who’d helped to mould my approach to ministry. God willing, in these remaining seventeen months as your Minister I hope I will continue to make you proud of all I do in the Master’s service.
